Let the two numbers be x and y
x + y = 18 . . . . . . . . (1)
x/y = 17 . . . . . . . . (2)
from (2): x = 17y
substituting for x in (1), gives
17y + y = 18
18y = 18
y = 18/18 = 1
x = 17y = 17(1) = 17

Therefore the two numbers are: 1 and 17
