Answer:

In a CERTAIN sense defend. The dropping of the atomic bombs allowed WW2 to be ended quicker than the other option that was available. The other option was to invade Japan with a massive Allied land force which would of probably resulted in more casualties in both military/civilian than the atomic bombs.
